What kind of boiler does a Putney home have?
Most likely a boiler in a flat. Most homes in East and West Putney are flats, a good many of them in purpose-built blocks. West Putney adds streets of terraced and family houses. Any of them could have a combi, or a boiler that heats a hot-water cylinder. We'll ask which when you ring.
Yes. Putney's water comes from Thames Water, which says all the water in its region is hard. Thames Water's latest report for the supply zone it names Putney Heath puts that zone in its hard band too.
Do I need planning permission for a new boiler flue in Putney?
In a conservation area, yes, when the flue goes on a wall of a house that faces the road, or on a side wall. That is the national rule, and Wandsworth Council's appraisals for the East Putney and Landford Road conservation areas spell it out. For a flat, or a house split into flats, the East Putney appraisal adds that most changes to the outside need permission anyway. It comes up when a boiler is replaced and its flue has to move.
The appraisals for the East Putney and Landford Road conservation areas list the works that need planning permission. Among them is any new, altered or replaced chimney, flue, soil or vent pipe on a wall facing the road, or on a side wall. Both describe boiler flues and outside gas and electricity boxes as small fittings whose effect on a building and its street adds up. They ask for them to be placed with care, in suitable materials and colours, and taken away once they are no longer used. The East Putney appraisal also notes that flats, maisonettes and houses converted into flats have no permitted development rights.
