Makes we repair

Heating trouble? What happens when you ringThree steps, and the engineer starts from what you told us.
  1. 1

We'll ask what the heating is doing

Cold radiators, one room or the whole house? We'll ask what the timer, the thermostat and the boiler show too.

  2. 2

    The rate, then a time

The rate is agreed on the call, before an engineer comes. We also tell you when one can get to you.

  3. 3

    The engineer traces the fault

The engineer checks the controls, the pump, the valves and the radiators before anything is changed. What happens on a heating repair visit.

Is it the heating or the boiler?

In a home with a hot water cylinder, hot taps with cold radiators often mean a fault in the heating system around the boiler:

  • the controls that tell the boiler when to heat
  • the valves that send the hot water round
  • the pump that moves it

On a combi boiler, the same signs usually point to a part inside the boiler. Boiler repairs, and the signs of each fault.

An electric boiler runs the same radiators, pipes and valves as a gas boiler. So a cold radiator, a leak on the pipework or a stuck valve is a heating repair on its system too. When the electric boiler itself has the fault. Electric boilers, kind by kind.

These are the signs we hear most, and what each usually means.

  • Heating not coming on

The timer and the thermostat are both calling for heat, and nothing happens. The usual causes are:

    • a motorised valve that won't open
    • a pump that has stopped
    • a control that has lost its connection to the boiler

We'll ask what the timer and the thermostat show when you ring.

  • Boiler not responding to the thermostat

A thermostat set below the room's temperature never calls for heat. A wireless one with flat batteries, or one that has lost its link to its receiver, can't call the boiler on. If the boiler still ignores it, the fault is in the thermostat, its receiver or the wiring.

  • A stuck zone valve or pump

A motorised valve sends the hot water to the radiators, the cylinder or both. Stuck shut, the heating stays cold. Stuck open, the heating may not switch off.

A failing pump gets noisy, or goes silent when it jams. Then the heat stays at the boiler while the radiators stay cold.

  • Some radiators cold

Where a radiator is cold points to the cause:

    • Cold at the top: usually air, which bleeding lets out.
    • Cold at the bottom: usually sludge.
    • One radiator cold all over: usually a stuck valve.

Why radiators stay cold, and what fixes each.

What happens on a heating repair visit?

Three stages, and the rate is agreed before the repair starts.

  1. 1. Before anything is touched

The engineer covers the floor where they work and asks what you have seen since you rang.

  2. 2. Finding the fault

The engineer tells you which part has failed, whether they have it with them or must order it, and how long the work should take. No work is done until the rate is agreed in writing and you say yes.

  3. 3. The repair

The engineer fits the part and checks the heating and the hot water both work before leaving. The repair is guaranteed for 12 months, covering the parts we fit, the labour and any return visit.

When is cleaning the system the answer?

Over the years, the water in a heating system collects sludge: black iron deposits from the inside of the radiators and pipes. It settles at the bottom of radiators, blocks valves and strains the pump. When sludge is the cause, a power flush clears it. A magnetic filter and inhibitor in the water then help keep the system clean.

When a part has failed, a flush won't fix it. The part needs replacing. The engineer tells you which it is before suggesting either. Power flushing: when it helps.

What changes the price of a heating repair?

No price is printed here, because it depends on:

  • the part the repair needs
  • how long the job takes
  • the time of day
  • the season

Once the engineer has found the fault, the rate is agreed in writing before the repair starts.

Questions about central heating repairs

Why won't my heating come on when the hot water works?

The boiler is working, so the fault is usually in the heating side of the system:

  • the timer or thermostat
  • the motorised valve that sends hot water to the radiators
  • the pump

Ring us and we'll ask what the controls show.

Why won't my heating turn off?

Heating that won't turn off usually comes down to one of these:

  • a thermostat set too high
  • a timer left on constant
  • a motorised valve stuck open, or with its manual lever left open

If the controls are set right and the radiators stay hot, the valve or the wiring needs an engineer.

Do I need a heating engineer or a plumber?

By law, any gas work, on the boiler or its gas supply, must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Our heating engineers are all Gas Safe registered, so one visit covers the boiler, the controls, the valves, the pump and the radiators.

Can you fix a thermostat the boiler ignores?

Yes. We find whether the fault is in the thermostat, its receiver or the wiring, and repair or replace it. On some Worcester Bosch controls, such as the Comfort RF and the Sense I, a lost signal shows as A21. If you would like a smarter control while we're there, we fit those too. Fitting a smart thermostat: what is involved.

The hot water cylinder isn't heating up: is that the boiler?

Not always. A cylinder heated by the boiler depends on its own motorised valve and thermostat, and either can fail while the boiler is fine. We repair the whole system, cylinders included.

How much does a heating repair cost?

The cost of a repair depends on the part, how long the job takes, the time of day and the season. The engineer agrees the rate with you in writing before starting. What changes the price.

Don't know what has failed? You don't have to.Ring and say what you can see or hear. Finding the fault is our job.
