What kind of boiler does an Ealing home have?
The boiler in an Ealing home changes across the borough. Around Ealing Broadway and in Acton most homes are flats, while Perivale, north Greenford and Southall are mostly terraced and semi-detached houses. Any of them could have a combi, or a system or regular boiler with a hot-water cylinder. We'll ask which when you ring.
In parts of Acton, more homes than across London as a whole are heated by electricity or by a heat network. Those flats have no gas boiler. If you're not sure what heats yours, ring us anyway. The first questions on the call settle it.
The differences between a combi, a system and a regular boiler.
Why does my boiler stop in a power cut in Ealing, and who do I ring?
Because a gas boiler needs mains electricity to run, so it switches off when the power goes. Across most of Ealing the local electricity network is run by SSEN, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks. UK Power Networks runs the network next door. You don't need to know which serves your street: ring 105, which is free and puts you through to the right operator.
When the power comes back, the boiler should start again by itself. Worcester Bosch, for one, says its heating picks up its programme. Ring us at any hour if yours stays off or shows a fault, and an engineer can come out to it. Ring us too if it stopped while the lights in the rest of the home stayed on.

A boiler that won't fire up, and the one reset worth trying.
Where can a new boiler flue go in an Ealing conservation area?
Out of sight of the street, wherever it can be. In a conservation area, a new flue on a wall or roof slope of a house that faces a road needs planning permission. Ealing Council's guidance asks for boiler flues to be small and tucked away. It comes up when a boiler is replaced and the flue has to move.

What Ealing Council's guidance says
The council's management plan for its conservation areas, from March 2023, asks for balanced flues to be small and placed unobtrusively. Where a house is converted into flats, it asks for boiler flues to be kept out of view from the road and other public places. It asks the same of satellite dishes and rooflights. The national rules let a householder fit a flue without planning permission. In a conservation area, they stop short of a wall or roof slope facing a road. They don't apply to flats at all.
When should I book a boiler service in Ealing?
