What does F62 mean?

F62 means the boiler's flame went out later than it should have when the gas valve shut. A Vaillant or Glow-worm boiler closes its gas valve to stop the burner, then watches for the flame to go out. If the boiler still senses a flame after the valve has been told to close, it stops and shows F62.

The causes the manuals give are parts inside the boiler:

  • the gas valve, which may be closing late or letting gas by
  • the board that controls the gas valve
  • the electrode at the burner

F62 is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer, so ring us and read out the code.

Which boilers show F62?

F62 is a Vaillant and Glow-worm code, and on both makes it points to the gas valve's shut-off. The two makes belong to the same group. How F62 appears on the display varies with the boiler's age. Every boiler fault code, make by make.

  • Vaillant F62

Vaillant shows F.62, a delay in the gas valve's switch-off, on these ranges:

    • the ecoTEC plus models before 2023
    • the ecoTEC pro and the ecoTEC exclusive
    • the ecoFIT pure and ecoFIT sustain
    • the ecoTEC sustain
    • the open-vent ecoTEC plus

The current ecoTEC plus, from 2023, shows F.062, and may add a line of text saying the flame's switch-off was detected late.

Older Vaillants use the same number. The ecoTEC of 2004 to 2006 calls F.62 a gas valve shut-off delay. On the turboMAX plus, F.62 is a flame still sensed 4 seconds after the gas valve turned off. Vaillant boiler repair, and every other Vaillant code.

  • Glow-worm F62

Glow-worm's Energy7, Easicom3 and Betacom4 show F.62, which their manuals call a gas valve switch-off fault. The Compact and MicraCom manuals call it a delayed shutdown of the gas valve.

The Betacom2, Betacom a and Ultracom2 show F62, with no dot. F62 is one of the codes from F61 to F68 that Glow-worm says point to the main board. The Betacom2's and Betacom a's manuals name F62 a gas valve closure fault. Glow-worm boiler repair, and every other Glow-worm code.

What causes F62?

The causes of F62 fall into four groups. Vaillant's manual for the current ecoTEC plus, and Glow-worm's for the Compact, list the first three in this order for the engineer to work through:

  • The gas valve. A valve that closes late, or doesn't seal and lets gas by. The older manuals call it leaking.
  • The main board. The electronics that drive the gas valve and read the flame signal.
  • The ignition electrode. The part that makes the spark, which the current manuals have the engineer check, and replace if need be.
  • The burner and the wiring. Vaillant's manual for the ecoTEC plus before 2023 adds dirt on the burner's surface, the plug and the wiring loom. The turboMAX plus manual names the burner tubes and the injectors.

Glow-worm's Energy7 manual words the causes this way:

  • the gas valve slow to switch off
  • the flame signal slow to die away
  • the gas valve letting gas by
  • the electronics

The manuals don't say how often each cause is the one behind an F62, so their order stands.

Worth knowing

The user guides give no reset for F62. They send any code outside their own tables to a competent person, so the next step is a call.

What can you safely check?

F62 leaves a householder very little to do. The makers' user guides give no step for it, and send any code outside their own tables to a competent person. Never open the boiler, and never touch anything that carries gas.

  1. 1. Is there a gas odour?

A smell of gas comes before anything on the boiler. If you can smell gas, don't reset the boiler. Open the gold "Smell gas?" bar on this page, which says what to do and gives the free number.

  2. 2. Note the code and the model

The exact code helps the engineer, whether it reads F.62, or F.062 on the current ecoTEC plus. Several faults can take turns on the display, two seconds each, so note every code you see. The model is on the label under the boiler, and you can read it without opening anything.

  3. 3. Leave the reset alone

The reset in the user guides is for the ignition fault, F28, not for F62. Because a gas valve that may be closing late is among F62's causes, don't reset the boiler to get it going. Ring us instead, and read out the code.

When should you stop and ring an engineer?

F62 needs an engineer as soon as the code shows. The user guides give a householder no step to clear it. Ring us straight away, and mention any of these when you do:

  • F62 has shown before, or comes back.
  • F.27 shows as well. The makers' manuals give F.27 for a flame sensed while the burner is off, and a gas valve that doesn't seal is among its causes.
  • Another code takes turns with F62 on the display.
  • Taking it further would mean opening the boiler.

If you smell gas, that comes before the boiler. Leave the reset alone, and use the free emergency number in the gold "Smell gas?" bar on this page. Testing the gas valve, the board and the flame sensing is work for our Gas Safe registered engineers.

The question we'll ask when you ring about F62

When you ring about F62, our first question is whether you can smell gas. The answer decides who comes first:

  • With a smell of gas, the gas emergency service comes first, on the number in the gold bar on this page.
  • Without one, our engineer comes.

We'll also want to know:

  • whether F62 has shown before
  • whether another code takes turns with it
  • the boiler's model, from the label underneath it
  • the exact code on the display

What changes the price of the fix?

What an F62 repair costs depends on what caused it. A dirty burner or a loose plug may need no new part. A gas valve, a main board or an ignition electrode is a part to fit. Before an engineer sets off, the rate is agreed on the call, and no work is done until you say yes. How our rates work.

Questions about F62

Can I keep resetting the boiler?

No, resetting a boiler that shows F62 isn't a step the user guides give. Their reset is for the ignition fault, F28, and any other code goes to a competent person. A gas valve that may be closing late is among F62's causes, so leave the reset alone and ring us. The resets the guides do allow are on the F28 fault code page.

Is F62 dangerous?

F62 is the boiler stopping for safety. The boiler sensed its flame going out late after the gas valve shut. A gas valve letting gas by is among the causes the manuals give. Have it looked at now rather than living with it. If you smell gas, treat it as an emergency. Open the gold "Smell gas?" bar on this page for the free number, and don't reset the boiler.

Why has F62 come back?

An F62 that comes back means its cause hasn't gone. The cause may be one of these:

  • a gas valve that closes late some of the time
  • the board that controls the gas valve
  • the ignition electrode

An engineer looks at each of them in turn.

How much does it cost to fix F62?

An F62 repair is priced by its cause, and by any part it needs. The rate is agreed by phone, so you know it before anyone comes out. How our rates work.
