Makes we repair
What does F54 mean?
F54 means the boiler found no gas pressure, or too little, as it tried to start. F54 comes with a second code beside it, F28 or F29. F28 means the boiler failed to light, and F29 that the flame was lost while it ran.
The simplest causes are the gas being off and a gas tap left closed, and both are safe to check yourself. The gas valve can also be at fault, and that is a part for an engineer.

Which boilers show F54?
F54 is a Vaillant code. Among the Vaillant manuals we read, one range lists it, the ecoTEC plus from before 2023. Read the model on the boiler, then the code. Every boiler fault code, make by make.
What causes F54?
The causes of F54 lie in the gas supply and the gas valve. Vaillant's manual for the ecoTEC plus before 2023 lists the checks in this order for the engineer to work through:
- The gas tap. The gas tap closed, under the boiler or on the supply to it.
- The gas valve. A fault in the part that lets gas through to the burner.
- The plug and the wiring. The gas valve's plug and the wiring loom.
Vaillant's own fault-code page adds the gas supply itself. Not enough gas may be reaching the boiler, or the gas pressure may be too low. The manual's checks for F54 go with those for F28 or F29, the code beside it. Vaillant gives no ranking of how often each cause happens, so the order follows the manual.

Worth knowing
The first check Vaillant's fault-code page gives for F.54 is whether gas reaches your other appliances, such as the hob.
What can you safely check?
F54's safe checks come from Vaillant's user guide and its fault-code page. Don't open the boiler's case, and don't touch any part that carries gas.
1. Is the gas on?
See whether the hob or another gas appliance works. A prepayment meter needs credit, so see that it hasn't run out. The user guide for these boilers names a closed gas tap as one reason the boiler won't start. See that the gas tap under the boiler is open.
2. Is it freezing outside?
Vaillant's fault-code page asks you to look for ice in the condensate pipe outside when F.54 shows in severe weather. Where the pipe has frozen at ground level, thaw it with warm water, never boiling. When a boiler won't fire up, and frozen condensate pipes.
3. Reset it, three times at most
Where F28 shows beside F54, the user guide's reset for F28 applies. Press the reset key for one second, and stop after three tries. If F54 comes back after that, ring us. The reset is set out on the F28 fault code page.

When should you stop and ring an engineer?
F54 is a job for an engineer once the guide's resets haven't cleared it, or as soon as one of these shows:
- The gas works everywhere else in the home and the gas tap under the boiler is open, yet F54 keeps coming back.
- F54 shows with F29, which means the flame was lost while the boiler ran. Vaillant's manual puts that down to a gas supply that cuts out now and then.
- F54 comes and goes, the boiler starting one day and not the next.
- The next step would mean taking the boiler's case off.
Smell gas? Then don't reset anything. The free emergency number is in the gold "Smell gas?" bar on this page. Otherwise, ring us, because testing the gas pressure and the gas valve is work for our Gas Safe registered engineers.
The question we'll ask when you ring about F54
We'll start by asking whether the hob and your other gas appliances work. If nothing gas works, the supply to the home is the likely cause of the F54. If everything else works, the fault is at the boiler, its gas tap or its gas valve. We'll also ask whether F28 or F29 shows with it, the boiler's model from the label underneath it, and the exact code on the display.
What changes the price of the fix?
Fixing F54 costs more or less depending on its cause. A gas tap left closed may need no part at all, but a gas valve is a part to fit. Before an engineer comes, the rate is agreed on the call. No work starts until you say yes. How our rates work.
Do you cover my part of London?
Yes: we fix F54 faults all over Greater London, day and night, in every borough north and south of the Thames. Pick your side of the river to see the areas.
North of the river
Every borough north of the Thames: Barnet and Enfield at the top, Hillingdon in the west, Havering in the east, and central London in between.
South of the river
Every borough south of the Thames: Richmond and Kingston in the west, Bexley in the east, and down through Croydon to Sutton and Bromley.
Questions about F54
Can I keep resetting the boiler?
With F28 beside it, F54 can be reset as the user guide allows for F28, three times at most. If F54 comes back after that, the cause needs an engineer, because resetting again won't raise the gas pressure.
Is F54 dangerous?
F54 on its own is the boiler protecting you. The boiler stops when too little gas pressure reaches it as it starts. A smell of gas, though, is an emergency. Don't reset the boiler, and open the gold "Smell gas?" bar on this page for the free number.
Why has F54 come back?
When F54 returns after a reset, its cause is still there. Too little gas pressure may be reaching the boiler, or the gas supply may be cutting out now and then. The gas valve may also be failing. An engineer tests each of these in turn.
How much does it cost to fix F54?
F54's repair cost depends on what caused it and any part it needs. The rate is agreed with you on the call, before an engineer comes. How our rates work.
