Are Myson boilers still made?

No, Myson boilers are no longer made. The boilers passed to Potterton in 1999. Myson today sells radiators, towel warmers, underfloor heating, fan convectors and heating controls, but no boiler.

  • Myson Heating, from 1986

Myson Heating was the name the old Thorn EMI Heating business took in 1986, when Myson Group bought it. It made radiators, fires, boilers, water heaters and more.

  • Potterton Myson, then Potterton

Blue Circle bought Myson Heating around 1990 and joined it with Potterton as Potterton Myson. When Baxi bought Potterton Myson in 1999, it split the business in two. The boilers went to Potterton, and the radiators to Myson.

  • Myson today

The Myson name belongs to a radiator and heating controls business in the Purmo Group, which sells no boiler.

We found no statement from any maker about parts for Myson boilers, and their manuals survive in manuals libraries. We are an independent firm, with no connection with Myson, Potterton or Baxi.

We fit new boilers in place of Mysons, quoted from photos or after a free survey visit. If yours has stopped, ring us, and we'll ask what it is doing.

What's involved in replacing a Myson?

Replacing a Myson starts with a quote. We work from photos of the old boiler, its flue and where it sits, or from a free survey visit. You have the quote in writing before any work starts. A quote from photos is confirmed at a survey before the new boiler goes in.

A condensing boiler in its place: none of the Myson manuals mentions a condensate drain, the pipe a condensing boiler needs. The Building Regulations ask more of a new gas boiler, so a like-for-like swap isn't the normal route.

An open flue: an Apollo C takes its air from the room and sends its fumes up a chimney or flue pipe. Replacing one changes the flue, and may move the boiler, as today's rules ask a gas boiler in a bathroom to be room-sealed. When you ring, we'll ask about the flue.

Sized to your home: a heat loss calculation sets the new boiler's size, and our engineers match its heating output to the home. The radiators are fully balanced when it goes in. Combi, system and regular boilers compared.

The rules for a new gas boiler in England:

  • it must meet a minimum efficiency, its ErP rating
  • a new combi needs one more energy saver, such as weather compensation or a smart thermostat that learns and adjusts
  • the heating is cleaned and flushed, and inhibitor is added
  • a carbon monoxide alarm goes in the same room

Vaillant and Worcester Bosch are the makes we fit most, and we fit every make and model. Where a maker's guarantee asks for its own magnetic filter, that filter goes in. Nothing is fitted without your yes.

Need heat back sooner? We fit emergency replacements too. When you ring, we'll ask what the boiler is doing and say when an engineer can come.

What a fitted new boiler includes, and how the day goes.

Terms: 15% off everything in the price we quote for a new boiler installation. That means the boiler, its flue and controls, and the fitting. The offer is for installations booked by 31 December 2026. One offer per home, and not with any other offer.

Which Myson do you have?

Myson's boilers are the Apollo, the Orion, the Marathon, the Economist and the Midas combis. They are wall-hung and floor-standing, from the 1980s and 1990s by their manuals. How each one lights tells them apart:

  • Apollo 15/30B, 30/50B, 40B, 50/65B and 65/80B

    Type

Wall-hung, room-sealed (a balanced flue), for the radiators and a cylinder

    How it lights

    A pilot light

  • Apollo 15/30C, 30/50C and 40C

    Type

Wall-hung, with an open flue to a chimney or flue pipe, for the radiators and a cylinder

    How it lights

A pilot lit by hand, with a push-button igniter

  • Apollo 15/30S, 30/50S and 40S

    Type

Wall-hung, fanned, room-sealed, for the radiators and a cylinder

    How it lights

A pilot lit by hand, with a push-button igniter

  • Apollo 30Si, 40Si and 50Si

    Type

Wall-hung, fanned, room-sealed, for the radiators and a cylinder

    How it lights

Lights itself, with a spark lighting the pilot each time

  • Apollo Fanfare and Orion 75Si

    Type

    Wall-hung

    How it lights

Not in the pages we could read

  • Marathon 60B to 100B

    Type

    Floor-standing

    How it lights

Not in the pages we could read

  • Economist WM

    Type

    Wall-hung, room-sealed (a balanced flue)

    How it lights

A permanent pilot lit by hand, with a push-button igniter

  • Midas B

    Type

    Wall-hung combi, room-sealed (a balanced flue)

    How it lights

A pilot lit by hand, with a push-button igniter

  • Midas Sfi

    Type

    Wall-hung combi, fanned, room-sealed

    How it lights

Lights itself, with a spark lighting the pilot each time

The Midas is Myson's combi. The Midas B has a pilot lit by hand, and the fanned Midas Sfi lights its own. Each heats the radiators and the hot water from one wall-hung boiler.

Other Myson names, such as the Olympic and the Gemini, have no manual we could read. Ring us, and we'll ask what yours does. Not a Myson? Try every make, current and discontinued, by type.

Myson faults, by what you see

A Myson boiler shows no fault code and no fault light to its owner. None of the Myson documents we read gives one, so the faults here go by what you see.

Each of the first five panels gives the causes in the order the manuals list them. The last panel holds what a Myson does show you.

A Myson's pilot won't light

What it means: A pilot that won't light on a Myson means no spark is reaching it, or no gas. That goes for an Apollo B, C or S, a Midas B and an Economist.

Possible causes, as the manuals list them: the spark first, then the gas reaching the pilot.

The spark:

  • the spark gap
  • the ignition lead
  • the electrode
  • the push-button igniter

The gas reaching the pilot:

  • a gas cock closed
  • air in the supply
  • low inlet pressure
  • the pilot's adjustment
  • a blocked pilot injector
  • on the Apollo C, its pilot filter

What you can do: A Myson's own lighting instructions show how its pilot is lit. Lighting a pilot is a gas step, though, so ring us instead.

If you smell gas, don't try to light anything. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

A Myson's pilot goes out when the gas control is let go

What it means: A pilot that lights on a Myson, then goes out when the gas control is let go, has a fault. The manuals trace it through the pilot flame, its thermocouple and the gas valve.

Possible causes, as the manuals list them:

  • a pilot flame too small
  • loose or dirty thermocouple connections
  • a thermocouple giving too little
  • a limit or overheat thermostat that has tripped
  • the gas valve

Why it matters: HSE lists pilot lights that often blow out among the signs of an appliance that may be making carbon monoxide. Turn the boiler off and leave it off.

Ring us. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. See what to do about gas and carbon monoxide.

A Myson's pilot is lit, but the burner won't light

What it means: A lit pilot with no burner on a Myson means one of two things. Either the boiler isn't being called for heat, or something between the call and the gas valve has stopped it.

Possible causes, as the manuals list them:

  • the controls not calling (the switches, the programmer, the thermostat's setting)
  • no electricity (a switch, the plug or the fuse)
  • the boiler's own thermostats and its three-way switch
  • the gas valve

Fanned models add the fan and its air pressure or flow switch.

What you can do: see that the electricity to the boiler is on, and that the programmer and thermostats are on and calling for heat.

If it still won't light, ring us.

A Myson shuts down on its overheat or limit thermostat

What it means: A Myson shut down by its overheat or limit thermostat has had water too hot inside it. On an Economist, the limit thermostat resets itself once cool, and the pilot then has to be lit again. An Apollo Si has a separate overheat cut-off on its flow pipe.

Possible causes if it trips all the time, as the manuals list them: the pump, then the boiler's high thermostat.

Possible causes if it trips after a spell of running:

  • the bypass
  • the pump's wiring
  • the boiler's mains wiring
  • then the cut-off itself

What you can do: nothing inside the case. A Myson's own lighting instructions show how the pilot is lit, but that's a gas step, so ring us instead.

If it happens more than once, ring us.

The hot water has stopped on a Myson Midas combi

What it means: No hot water from a Myson Midas B has a set order of checks in its manual. The pilot and the heating come first, then the flow at the tap.

Possible causes, as the manual lists them:

  • first, the pilot and the heating side
  • then the flow at the tap, which needs at least 3 litres a minute (the flow regulator and filter, or very low mains pressure)
  • then the relay board, the flow switch and hot water overheat thermostat, the hot water sensor and the driver board
  • then the limit thermostat and the hot water pump

What you can do: run the hot tap fully open, and see that the heating works.

If there is still no hot water, ring us.

MoreWhat a Myson shows you

A Myson shows no fault code and no fault light to its owner. Its manuals say it does show the things listed here. The Midas Sfi's lights are inside the case, for engineers, and the case stays on.

  • Midas Sfi

    What you see

Six lights on the control board, inside the case

    What it tells you

The fan's airflow, the fan, the pumps and the call to light. These lights are for engineers, with the case off

  • Midas Sfi

    What you see

Nothing for about 30 seconds after it is switched on

    What it tells you

Normal: it sets itself up before answering a call for heat

  • Economist

    What you see

    A sight window

    What it tells you

Where the pilot flame is watched while it is lit

  • Midas B

    What you see

    A dial gauge

    What it tells you

The heating's temperature and pressure. The Midas B works between 0.5 and 3 bar, and is filled to 1.5 bar when fitted

The manuals' order isn't a ranking of how often each cause happens.

Pilot lights and open flues on older Mysons

Several Myson ranges have a pilot light lit by hand. The Apollo C and S, the Midas B and the Economist light theirs with a push-button igniter. The Apollo Si and the Midas Sfi light their own. A Myson's own lighting instructions show how, but lighting a pilot is a gas step, so ring us instead.

A pilot that keeps going out is a warning sign. HSE lists pilot lights that often blow out among the signs of an appliance that may be making carbon monoxide. The other signs it gives are:

  • yellow or orange flames
  • soot or staining
  • more condensation on the windows than usual

With any of these signs, turn the boiler off and ring us. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. See the steps for a gas smell or a carbon monoxide alarm.

The Apollo C has an open flue. It takes its air from the room and sends its fumes up a chimney or flue pipe, which needs a steady draw. Its manual says it shouldn't go in a bedroom, a room with a bath or shower, or a garage. Today's rules ask a gas boiler in a bathroom to be room-sealed. Gas Safe Register says an installation that doesn't meet today's standards isn't necessarily unsafe. An engineer judges it by what they find.

If you smell gas, don't try to light anything. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Myson: your questions

Does Myson still make boilers?

No, Myson no longer makes boilers. The boilers passed to Potterton when Baxi split Potterton Myson in 1999. The Myson name now belongs to a radiator and heating controls business, which sells no boiler.

Is a Myson Midas a combi?

Yes, a Myson Midas is a combi. The Midas B has a pilot lit by hand, while the fanned Midas Sfi lights its own. Both heat the radiators and the hot water from one wall-hung boiler. Every Myson range.

Is it safe to relight a Myson's pilot myself?

Relighting a Myson's pilot is a gas step, so ring us rather than try it. The boiler's own lighting instructions show how. A pilot that keeps going out can be a sign of carbon monoxide, HSE says. If you smell gas, don't try at all. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Do Myson boilers have fault codes?

No, Myson boilers have no fault codes, and no fault light for their owners. The Midas Sfi's six lights are on its control board, inside the case, for engineers. The faults, by what you see.

Can you still get parts for a Myson?

Parts for Myson boilers have no maker's statement behind them that we could find, from Baxi, Potterton or Myson. Their manuals survive in manuals libraries. We fit new boilers in place of Mysons, quoted from photos or after a free survey visit. Ring us, and we'll ask which one you have.

Can you replace a Myson in an emergency?

Yes, a Myson that has stopped can be replaced as an emergency. We fit emergency replacements, so ring us day or night. We'll ask what the boiler is doing, and say when an engineer can come.

What does a new boiler cost?

A new boiler's cost comes down to the boiler itself, your home and what the job needs. We quote from photos or after a free survey visit, and the quote sets it all out in writing before any work starts. How our quotes and rates work.

Do I need to know which Myson I have?

No, there's no need to know which Myson you have. Say what the boiler is doing when you ring, and we'll ask the rest. A few photos of the boiler, its flue and where it sits help us quote for a new one.

Don't know what has failed? You don't have to.Ring and say what you can see or hear. Finding the fault is our job.
