Makes we repair

Does Malvern still make boilers?

Malvern Boilers Limited stopped making boilers for homes at the end of 2007, after more than eighteen thousand since 1991. It now makes commercial water heaters, boilers and other appliances for other brands. The company, of Malvern in Worcestershire, is still in business.

Malvern still sells parts for the home boilers it made. Its support page says the spares are still stocked, and it keeps each model's manuals and parts lists there. Whether a given part is in stock on the day is Malvern's to say.

We fit new boilers in place of Malverns, quoted from photos or after a free survey visit. We are an independent firm, with no connection with Malvern Boilers Limited. If your Malvern has stopped, ring us, and we'll ask which lamps are lit.

What's involved in replacing a Malvern?

Replacing a Malvern starts with a quote. That quote comes from photos of the old boiler, its flue and where it sits, or after a free survey visit. It's in writing before any work starts. If we quoted from photos, a survey confirms the quote before the new boiler is fitted.

Sized to your home: our engineers work out the new boiler's size with a heat loss calculation. They set its heating output to suit the home, and balance the radiators fully when it goes in. Every Malvern but the Combi heats a hot water cylinder, so we'll ask whether you'd keep the cylinder or change to a combi. See how combi, system and regular boilers differ.

What the rules ask of a new gas boiler in England:

  • a minimum efficiency, its ErP rating
  • on a new combi, one more energy saver, such as weather compensation or a smart thermostat that learns and adjusts
  • a cleaned and flushed heating system, with inhibitor added
  • a carbon monoxide alarm in the same room

The makes we fit most are Vaillant and Worcester Bosch, though we fit every make and model. Where a maker's guarantee asks for its own magnetic filter, we fit that. Nothing is fitted without your yes.

Need heat back sooner? We fit emergency replacements too. Ring us, and we'll ask what the boiler is doing and say when an engineer can come.

Which Malvern do you have?

Every Malvern is a wall-hung condensing boiler with a fan, made between 1991 and 2007, most in a plain white case. The lamps on its front tell the models apart. Most models had a Servowarm twin, made by Malvern.

  • Malvern 30, 40 and 50

    Its Servowarm twin

Servowarm HE30, Elite HE 40 and Elite HE 50

    Type

Malvern lamps and what they mean

A Malvern boiler shows its state with lamps, not fault codes:

  • ON, PILOT, RUNNING and LOCKOUT on the 30 to 70/80
  • ON and LOCKOUT on the Condensing Combi
  • seven lamps on the 1020 and 2026 (power, running, pump, fan, pilot, burner and lockout)

The first six panels below are the faults Malvern's papers explain. The last holds every lamp, model by model.

The LOCKOUT lamp is lit on a Malvern

What it means: A lit LOCKOUT lamp means a safety thermostat has stopped the Malvern. Either the flue got too hot, or the water overheated because too little was flowing. On a Condensing Combi, the lamp can also mean the boiler failed to light.

Possible causes on the 30 to 70/80, as the manuals list them:

  • the flue thermostat
  • the overheat thermostat
  • the control thermostat
  • then the sequence board

Possible causes on the Combi:

  • the overheat cut-out
  • the flue thermostat
  • then the fan's supply and the ignition board

Possible causes on the 1020 and 2026:

  • too little water flow, or the overheat thermostat
  • then a blocked flue, the fan or the flue thermostat
  • the flow and return pipes fitted the wrong way round

What you can do: reset once, the way your model's guide shows. Each model's steps are in the reset section below.

If it locks out again, ring us. We'll ask which lamps are lit.

A Malvern stopped by its condensate pipe, blocked or frozen

What it means: A blocked condensate pipe stops a Malvern as a safety measure. Every Malvern is a condensing boiler, with a drain pipe for the water it makes. When that pipe blocks or freezes, the boiler stops. The 30 to 70/80 starts again by itself once the blockage clears.

Possible causes, as the manuals list them: a blocked syphon or trap, or a frozen pipe outside. On the 1020 and 2026, the same lamps (power, running and pump) can also mean a blocked flue, the fan or its air pressure switch.

What you can do: in freezing weather, keep the outside drain free of ice, as Malvern's user guides ask. The safe checks for a frozen condensate pipe on any boiler are on the page on a boiler that won't fire up.

If it doesn't restart once the pipe is clear, ring us. Clearing the trap inside is an engineer's job.

A Malvern slow to fire, or doing nothing: the delay timer

What it means: A short wait before a Malvern fires is normal. A built-in delay timer holds the boiler for a few minutes after its own thermostat calls:

  • about three and a half minutes on the 30 to 70/80
  • two minutes on the 1020 and 2026, whose running lamp flashes slowly while it waits

A call from your programmer or room thermostat isn't delayed.

When it's a fault: on a 1020 or 2026, a running lamp still flashing after two minutes means the boiler is stuck in its delay. Switch the boiler's electricity off and back on, once.

If it sticks again, ring us. The manual's next step is the control board, an engineer's job.

The PILOT lamp is lit on a Malvern, but not RUNNING

What it means: A lit PILOT lamp with no RUNNING lamp is a pilot that hasn't lit. The Malvern tried with its automatic spark, and couldn't prove a flame. On a 1020 or 2026, the same fault shows as every lamp lit but burner.

Possible causes, as the manuals list them:

  • no gas at the pilot
  • then the spark's lead or electrode
  • then the sequence controller or control board
  • on the 1020 and 2026, the live and neutral wires the wrong way round

What you can do: see that the gas is on and your other gas appliances work, then reset once. A Malvern lights its pilot by itself, and no Malvern user guide gives steps for lighting one by hand.

If it won't light, ring us. If you smell gas, don't reset anything. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

No lamps at all on a Malvern, or the power lamp out

What it means: No lamps on a Malvern means no electricity is reaching it. On a 1020 or 2026, no lamps can also mean the fuse on its control board has blown. A Condensing Combi with no lamps may also have a timer with no power.

What you can do: see that the fused switch for the boiler is on. See too that the programmer and thermostats are on and calling for heat.

If the supply is on and the lamps stay out, ring us. The control board's fuse is inside the case, an engineer's job.

Low pressure on a Malvern Condensing Combi

What it means: Low pressure on a Malvern Condensing Combi shows on its gauge. Malvern's user guide asks for more than 1 bar when the boiler is cold, and says that below 0.5 bar the system needs re-pressurising.

What you can do: Malvern's guide says to have the system re-pressurised, and gives owners no steps for topping it up.

Ring us if the gauge reads low, or the pressure keeps falling. We'll ask what the gauge reads.

How do you reset a Malvern boiler?

A Malvern is reset in one of three ways, by model, when its LOCKOUT lamp is lit:

  • Malvern 30, 40, 50 and 70/80: press the reset switch beneath the boiler, at the place marked on the front. If it doesn't start, let it cool, then press it once more.
  • Condensing Combi: turn the boiler off at its switch and back on. If it keeps locking out, ring us.
  • 1020 and 2026: turn the boiler thermostat to off, then back on. If it doesn't start, let it cool, then try once more.

If it still won't run, turn the boiler and the programmer off and ring us. On the 1020 and 2026, the flue thermostat's own reset sits on the flue hood inside the case, so that's an engineer's job.

Keep the case on. Malvern's guides say there are no parts inside for owners, and the case must not be disturbed. Steam from the flue outside is normal for a condensing boiler.

If you smell gas, don't reset anything. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Malvern: your questions

Is Malvern still in business?

Yes, Malvern Boilers Limited is still in business, in Malvern, Worcestershire, but it no longer makes boilers for homes. It made its last at the end of 2007, and makes commercial appliances for other brands now. Its support page still sells parts for the home boilers it made.

Can I still get parts for a Malvern?

Parts for Malvern boilers are still sold by Malvern Boilers Limited, which says the spares for its home boilers are still stocked. Whether a given part is in stock on the day is Malvern's to say. If your Malvern has stopped, ring us. We'll ask which lamps are lit, and we can quote for a new boiler in its place.

Is a Servowarm Elite a Malvern?

Yes, a Servowarm Elite boiler is a Malvern. Malvern says it made its home boilers for both Malvern and Servowarm. Its parts lists pair each Servowarm model with its Malvern twin, such as the Servowarm Elite 21 Plus with the Malvern 1020.

Do Malvern boilers have fault codes?

No, Malvern boilers have no fault codes and no display. They show their state with lamps:

  • ON, PILOT, RUNNING and LOCKOUT on the 30 to 70/80
  • ON and LOCKOUT on the Condensing Combi
  • seven lamps on the 1020 and 2026

What each Malvern lamp means.

How do I reset a Malvern boiler?

Resetting a Malvern depends on the model:

  • On the 30 to 70/80, press the reset switch beneath the boiler.
  • On the Condensing Combi, turn the boiler off and back on.
  • On the 1020 and 2026, turn the boiler thermostat to off and back on.

If the LOCKOUT lamp comes back, ring us.

Is an old Malvern safe to keep using?

An old Malvern isn't unsafe because of its age alone. Gas Safe Register says an installation that doesn't meet today's standards isn't necessarily unsafe. An engineer judges a boiler by what they find. If a lamp keeps lighting, ring us. If you smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. What to do about gas and carbon monoxide.

Can you replace a Malvern in an emergency?

Yes, we fit emergency replacements, so a Malvern that has stopped can be replaced as an emergency. Ring us day or night, and we'll ask what the boiler is doing and say when an engineer can come.

What does a new boiler cost?

What a new boiler costs depends on the boiler, your home and what the job needs. Your quote, from photos or after a free survey visit, sets it all out in writing before any work starts. How our rates and quotes work.

Do I need to know which Malvern I have?

No, you needn't know which Malvern you have. Say what the boiler is doing when you ring, and we'll ask the rest. Photos of the boiler, its flue and where it sits help us quote for a new one.

Don't know what has failed? You don't have to.Ring and say what you can see or hear. Finding the fault is our job.
