What happened to Halstead?

Halstead boilers are no longer made. Glen Dimplex, which owned the business, stopped making condensing gas boilers in April 2012. Halstead Boilers Ltd was dissolved in November 2020.

  • Made in Essex from 1975

Halstead boilers were made in Halstead, Essex, from 1975, and Halstead Boilers Ltd, the company behind them, was set up in 1990.

  • Glen Dimplex from 2004

Glen Dimplex bought the company in 2004, moved the work to Prescot, near Liverpool, in 2009, and traded as Glen Dimplex Boilers.

  • The last boilers in 2012

Glen Dimplex stopped making condensing gas boilers in April 2012, and the older, non-condensing ranges had ended before that.

  • The company closed in 2020

Halstead Boilers Ltd was wound up by its members in 2019, solvent, and dissolved on 14 November 2020.

No maker supports Halstead boilers today. The Glen Dimplex Boilers website had gone by 2016, and we found no statement from anyone else about Halstead parts. We are an independent firm, with no connection with Halstead or Glen Dimplex.

We fit new boilers in place of Halsteads, quoted from photos or after a free survey visit. If yours has stopped, ring us, and we'll ask which range you have and what it shows.

What's involved in replacing a Halstead?

Replacing a Halstead starts with a quote, from photos of the old boiler, its flue and where it sits, or after a free survey visit. The quote is in writing before any work starts. A quote made from photos is confirmed at a survey before the new boiler is fitted.

A condensing boiler in place of an older one: the Best, Hero, Quattro, Ace and Finest aren't condensing boilers. The Building Regulations ask more of a new gas boiler than those ranges were made to give, so a condensing boiler goes in their place.

An open flue: a floor-standing Buckingham CFF sends its fumes up a chimney. An Eden X or Ace HE can be fitted with an open flue kit. Replacing a boiler with an open flue changes the flue. We'll ask about the flue when you ring.

Sized to your home: our engineers size the new boiler with a heat loss calculation, and set its heating output to suit the home. They balance the radiators fully when it goes in. How combi, system and regular boilers differ.

What the rules ask of a new boiler: in England, a new gas boiler must meet a minimum efficiency, its ErP rating. Three more things come with it:

  • one more energy saver on a new combi, such as weather compensation or a smart thermostat that learns and adjusts
  • the heating cleaned and flushed, with inhibitor added
  • a carbon monoxide alarm in the same room

The makes we fit most are Vaillant and Worcester Bosch, and we fit every make and model. The maker's own magnetic filter goes in where its guarantee asks for one. Nothing is fitted without your yes.

Need heat back sooner? We fit emergency replacements. Ring us, and we'll ask what the boiler is doing and say when an engineer can come.

15% off a new boiler, fitted

The 15% comes off the price of a new boiler installation. We quote from photos of your old boiler, or after a free survey visit. Now is the time to replace an old or discontinued boiler.

Ask for a quoteCall us now

Terms: 15% off everything in the price we quote for a new boiler installation. That means the boiler, its flue and controls, and the fitting. The offer is for installations booked by 31 December 2026. One offer per home, and not with any other offer.

Which Halstead do you have?

Halstead made many ranges of gas boiler, wall-hung and floor-standing, and the range's name is usually on a badge on the front. These are the ranges whose user guides we could read, and the way each shows a fault tells them apart:

A Wickes boiler may be a Halstead. Halstead's own spares lists match these Wickes models to its ranges:

  • the Wickes 82 and 102 to the Ace
  • the Wickes 90 to the Finest
  • the Wickes Heat 40 and 60 to the Hero
  • the Wickes LW cast iron models to the Best

Older names, such as the first Eden, the Bentley, the Blenheim and the iHeat, have no guide we could read. Ring us, and we'll ask what yours shows. Not a Halstead? See every make, current and discontinued, by type.

Halstead fault codes and lights, range by range

A Halstead shows a fault in one of four ways, by range:

  • neons or LEDs on the older ranges
  • a code on four LEDs on the Eden X CBX and SBX
  • one digit on the Eden X VBX, Ace HE and Club HE
  • a neon or nothing on the Buckingham and Balmoral

The same character means different things on different ranges, so each code here is named with its range.

The first six panels below are the faults Halstead's user guides explain. The last three hold every light and code.

A Halstead ignition lockout: it won't light

What it means: An ignition lockout means the Halstead tried to light and couldn't prove a flame. The sign depends on the range:

  • the ignition lockout neon on a Best
  • the green neon staying dark on a Quattro
  • the red Lockout LED on an Ace
  • the red LED flashing on a Finest
  • the code 0011 (or 0010 for no gas) on an Eden X CBX, SBX or Finest Platinum
  • the code 3 on an Eden X VBX, Ace HE or Club HE
  • the Reset neon on a Buckingham

Possible causes, as the manuals list them: no gas or low gas pressure, then no flame signal on lighting.

Also on a Best:

  • the fan
  • the air pressure switch (a blocked flue or air duct)
  • the gas valve
  • the spark
  • the flame sensor
  • the ignition device

Also on a Hero: air in the gas pipe, then a fault inside.

What you can do: see that the gas is on and your other gas appliances work. Then reset once, the way your range's guide shows. See every range's reset.

If it locks out again, ring us. If you smell gas, don't reset anything. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

A Halstead has overheated

What it means: An overheat means the water in the Halstead got too hot and a safety device stopped it. Each range shows it in its own way:

  • the over-heat neon on a Best
  • the LOCK OUT neon on a Hero
  • the red neon on a Quattro
  • the red LED on an Ace
  • a steady red LED on a Finest
  • the code 1 on an Eden X VBX, Ace HE or Club HE
  • the code 0001 on an Eden X CBX, SBX or Finest Platinum

Possible causes, as the manuals list them:

  • too little water
  • too little water flowing
  • the overheat thermostat
  • a sensor or the boiler's own thermostat

The Eden X and Ace HE guides put the trip above 105 degrees.

What you can do: let the boiler cool, then reset once, the way your range's guide shows. Several ranges have an overheat button of their own:

  • on an Ace or Finest, underneath at the left
  • on a Quattro, on top at the left
  • on a Quattro Gold, underneath at the rear
  • on a Balmoral, under the control box cover

If it trips again, ring us. The Best's guide asks for an engineer to check the boiler and system even if it runs on.

Falling pressure on a Halstead combi or system boiler

What it means: Falling pressure on a Halstead's gauge can mean a water leak. The guides give about 1 bar when the boiler is cold, or 1 to 2 bar on the Finest Platinum. They add that a fall over time may mean water is escaping.

What you can do: Halstead's guides give owners no steps for topping up. They say to ask a registered engineer, and not to fire the boiler if the pressure has fallen to zero.

Ring us if the pressure keeps falling. We'll ask what the gauge reads.

A water flow failure on a Halstead

What it means: A water flow failure means too little water is flowing through the Halstead, or its sensors read a wrong temperature difference. The range decides what you see:

  • the code 0 on an Ace HE or Club HE
  • the code 1010 on an Eden X CBX or SBX
  • the code 2 on an Eden X VBX
  • a flashing Power On LED on an Ace or Ace High, whose flow switch has failed

What you can do: nothing at home, as these aren't among the codes the guides let you reset.

Ring us. We'll ask which code or light is showing.

No lights and no display on a Halstead

What it means: No lights and no display on a Halstead means no power is reaching it, the guides say.

What you can do: see that the fused switch for the boiler and the boiler's own switch are on.

If they are on and it stays dark, ring us.

A Halstead's flue gas is too hot

What it means: Flue gas too hot means the gas leaving a condensing Halstead went above 95 degrees. It shows as 4 on an Eden X VBX, Ace HE or Club HE, and 0100 on an Eden X CBX or SBX.

What you can do: the Ace HE and Club HE guides let you reset codes 1 to 4, but the cause needs an engineer.

How do you reset a Halstead boiler?

A Halstead is reset its own way on each range, once, as its user guide shows:

  • Best: wait 15 seconds, then press the ignition reset button once.
  • Hero: turn the thermostat fully anticlockwise to RESET, wait 30 seconds, then follow its lighting steps again. After an overheat, turn it to Stand-By for 30 seconds, then back on.
  • Quattro: wait 15 seconds (5 on the Quattro Gold), then press the ignition reset button once.
  • Ace and Ace High: turn the main switch through to Reset, and it springs back.
  • Finest and Finest Gold: turn the power off for ten seconds, then back on.
  • Finest Platinum, Eden X CBX and SBX: press the Reset button briefly.
  • Eden X VBX, Ace HE and Club HE: turn the knob fully anticlockwise to RESET/STANDBY and straight back to ON, inside two seconds. The Ace HE and Club HE guides allow this for codes 1 to 4. For any other code, ring us.
  • Buckingham 4 CFF: turn the temperature control to 0, wait 30 seconds, then follow its lighting steps again.

If it fails again, ring us. Every Halstead range lights itself, so there is no pilot to light by hand. The guides give owners no steps for topping up the pressure.

Leave the case on, and keep the flue terminal and any vents clear. A plume of steam from a condensing Halstead's flue is normal, and its condensate drain must not be altered or blocked.

If you smell gas, don't reset anything. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Halstead: your questions

Is Halstead still in business?

No, Halstead is no longer in business. Halstead Boilers Ltd was dissolved on 14 November 2020. Glen Dimplex, its last owner, stopped making condensing gas boilers in April 2012. No maker supports Halstead boilers today.

Is there an open-flued Halstead?

Yes, open-flued Halsteads exist. The floor-standing Buckingham 4 CFF sends its fumes up a chimney. An Eden X or Ace HE can be fitted with an open flue kit, which needs an air vent in the same room. Most other Halsteads are room-sealed, with a balanced flue. If yours has an open flue, we'll ask about it when you ring for a quote.

Can you still get Halstead parts?

Halstead parts have no maker behind them today. The Glen Dimplex Boilers website had gone by 2016, and the company was dissolved in 2020. We found no statement from anyone else about parts. We fit new boilers in place of Halsteads, quoted from photos or after a free survey visit. Ring us, and we'll ask which range you have.

Are Wickes boilers made by Halstead?

Some Wickes boilers are Halsteads under another name. Halstead's own spares lists show which:

  • the Wickes 82 and 102 match the Ace
  • the Wickes 90 matches the Finest
  • the Wickes Heat 40 and 60 match the Hero
  • the Wickes LW cast iron models match the Best
What does code 3 mean on a Halstead?

Code 3 on a Halstead Eden X VBX, Ace HE or Club HE means no gas, or a lockout after five tries at lighting. See that the gas is on and your other gas appliances work. Then reset once, by turning the knob fully anticlockwise to RESET/STANDBY and straight back to ON. If 3 comes back, ring us.

What does a flashing red light mean on a Halstead?

A flashing red LED on a Halstead Finest or Finest Gold means an ignition lockout after three tries. Turn the power off for ten seconds, then back on. A steady red LED on the same boilers means a fault, an overheat among them. On an Eden X CBX or SBX, a steady red Reset button means a lockout. Its code shows on four LEDs when you hold Reset for three seconds. If a red light comes back, ring us.

Can I top up a Halstead's pressure myself?

Topping up a Halstead's pressure isn't in its user guides. The guides say to ask a registered engineer if the pressure falls, and not to fire the boiler if it has fallen to zero. Ring us, and we'll ask what the gauge reads.

What does a new boiler cost?

The cost of a new boiler depends on the boiler, your home and what the job needs. Your quote, from photos or after a free survey visit, sets it all out in writing before any work starts. How our rates and quotes work.

Do I need to know which Halstead I have?

No, you don't need to know which Halstead you have. Ring and say what the boiler is doing, and we'll ask the rest. Photos of the boiler, its flue and where it sits help us quote for a new one.

Don't know what has failed? You don't have to.Ring and say what you can see or hear. Finding the fault is our job.
